Tough Justice: Countdown 1-8 (various authors) - #review

Tick. Tock. BOOM.

FBI Special Agent Lara Grant had thought that she’d put her past behind her—finally—with her last case. But now a serial bomber is targeting Manhattan’s elite power players, offering them a choice between saving hundreds of lives or seeing their darkest secrets exposed. Lara is working with the Crisis Management Unit to stop the bomber, but how will she react when she’s the one who has to choose between truth…or death?

Part 1 of 8: an explosive new installment in the thrilling FBI serial from New York Times bestselling author Carla Cassidy and Tyler Anne Snell, Emmy Curtis and Janie Crouch.

MY REVIEW

The Tough Justice Countdown series has some of the best, if not THE best, transitions from book to book I have ever come across.  And I'm a stickler for those cliff-hanging transitions.  (As an example, I was not particularly impressed with the ending of the first LOTR movie, so yeah, my standards for this thing is tough!)  I was so engrossed at the end of each book that I was driven to immediately start the next!

Another truly impressive facet of the series is the consistency of characters from author to author.  The publishers could have made up a pen name for the four of these ladies as a group and no one would have been the wiser that they weren't all written by one author!

There was all the in-fighting amongst the federal alphabet agencies and the local LEOs (law enforcement officers) that an NCIS fan would expect from such a thrilling story (aka thrilling stories).
Laura and her partner have a personal as well as a professional history and there is a nice tension between them, especially considering the uber-stressful case they have on their desks.  (For those readers who prefer their romance reads sweet i/o spicy, there is an *ahem* 'encounter' in one of the latter installments.  It is thoroughly described, but does not use those overly crass terms that will make some uncomfortable.)

This is a great series to read!  I'm assuming the first "Tough Justice" series is of similar quality, and may just have to set that aside for the next read-a-thon in which I participate.  In fact, all four of these authors have an impressive output of work.  I see myself happily ensconced on our 'back porch' for months of entertaining reading!

MEET THE AUTHORS!

Carla Cassidy lives in the Midwest with her husband, Frank .  Although she always loved to write, initially her dream was to be a dancer and actress.

She was a cheerleader for the Kansas City Chiefs football team and worked in local theater productions before packing her bags and leaving for New York City.  There she got a job as a singer/dancer in a band that traveled the east coast.  It was during those travels that she met her hero and married him.

While her children were small she remembered her love of writing and in 1988 sold her first book, a young adult romance.  In 1991 she sold her first adult romance to Silhouette and since that time has written over eighty books for Silhouette and Harlequin.

In 2004 she sold her first romantic suspense novel to New American Library. She now writes for Silhouette, Harlequin and NAL Signet.

Emmy Curtis is an editor and a romance writer. An ex-pat Brit, she quells her homesickness with Cadbury Flakes, Galaxy Counters, and Fray Bentos pies. Her life is chock full of hoot, just a little bit of nanny. And if you get that reference, well, she already considers you kin.

She is represented by Laura Bradford, of the Laura Bradford Literary Agency, and writes for Grand Central Publishing‘s Forever Yours line.

She’s lived in LondonParis and New York, and has settled, for the time being, in Germany.

When not writing, Emmy loves to travel with her military husband, and take long walks with their Lab.

Emmy Curtis is a pen name.

Winner of the Golden Quill Award for Best Romantic Suspense, and a finalist in multiple other Romance literary awards, Janie Crouch loves to read - almost exclusively romance - and has been doing so since middle school. She cut her teeth on Harlequin (Mills & Boon) Romances when she lived in Wales, UK as a preteen, then moved on to a passion for romantic suspense as an adult.

Janie recently relocated with her husband and four children to Germany (due to her husband's job as support for the U.S. Military), after living in Virginia for nearly 20 years.  When she's not listening to the voices in her head (and even when she is), she enjoys traveling, long-distance running, movie-watching, knitting and adventure (obstacle) racing. Janie completed an Ironman Triathlon in 2014 and is prepping for another one in 2017.

Her favorite quote: "Life is a daring adventure or nothing." - Helen Keller.
